The mandate of the Industrial Development Authority, established under the Western Province Statute No. 2 of 1994, is to contribute to national development by empowering and strengthening entrepreneurs in the province, creating opportunities for them to enter the industrial sector, utilizing regional resources effectively, introducing new technologies, and enhancing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of individuals engaged in industries as well as those aspiring to start new ventures.
To achieve this goal, we must focus on creating a sustainable industrial sector that aligns with global competitive demand by leveraging modern technology and opening pathways toward sustainable development objectives.
Everything that can be produced within the country should be produced locally. The collapse of traditional industries has significantly impacted the nation’s future. As an agricultural country, Sri Lanka’s progress is heavily dependent on the industrial sector. However, compared to the past, Sri Lanka’s industrial sector has experienced a significant decline. In earlier times, a large portion of the Sri Lankan population built their livelihoods through various industries.
These industries included textile and fabric production, pottery, metal and weapon manufacturing, woodworking, and many other traditional crafts. These industries not only sustained livelihoods but also served as major sources of national income. However, in recent times, these industries have diminished and even disappeared due to weak economic policies and inadequate attention to local industries by successive governments, leading to a severe decline in the industrial sector of Sri Lanka.
To overcome the current economic crisis facing Sri Lanka, it is essential to strengthen domestic production and focus on export-oriented manufacturing.
Reviving the production economy is a crucial and top priority to achieve the government’s noble policy of “A Rich Country – Beautiful Life.”
Through the Industrial Development Authority, we aim to launch a significant initiative to support micro, small, and medium-scale entrepreneurs in the Western Province by providing the necessary assistance to sustain and grow their industries.
We are committed to addressing challenges faced by entrepreneurs when starting new industries, providing essential knowledge and skills for existing businesses, facilitating market access, improving product quality, and fostering productivity concepts to create strong, sustainable entrepreneurs capable of competing globally. Additionally, we will support entrepreneurs in gaining access to international markets for export-quality products.
In particular, we aim to introduce a new industrial culture in the Western Province by offering maximum support for youth entrepreneurship and innovation.
Therefore, I urge the people of the Western Province to register with our Authority and take advantage of the free services we offer for industrial development.
